To bring a welcome news about it, he thought about it Gui Rambo of 9to5Mac, who has created a small utility called “DarkModeBuddy“. As the name itself implies, it is an accessory application to the Dark Mode which, while running in the background, takes care of activating or not this mode depending on what is detected by the ambient lighting sensor.
The Mac added support for a system-wide Dark Mode with macOS 10.14, and support for automatic Dark Mode switching came the following year with Catalina. Since then, Apple has made few changes to the Dark Mode experience on the Mac.
A new third-party app, DarkModeBuddy, released today expands the macOS Dark Mode feature with support for switching modes based on the ambient light sensor.
Developed by 9to5Mac’s Gui Rambo, DarkModeBuddy is a Mac utility that runs in the background to automatically switch your Mac between light and dark modes based on the ambient light sensor. For those unaware, the ambient light sensor is what also determines your automatic brightness level.

In the app, you can set your own preferences for the ambient light threshold and delay time. The delay time is there to prevent flickering, so the ambient light level must persist for your preferred amount of time.
Here’s Rambo’s explanation on how the app works:

The solution for that is DarkModeBuddy. It’s a tiny app that keeps running in the background and reads the ambient light sensor on your Mac (the same one it uses to adjust the brightness of your screen). When the ambient light level falls below the configured value, DarkModeBuddy automatically switches the Mac into Dark Mode. When the ambient light level rises above the configured value, it goes back into Light mode. This does not happen instantaneously: in order to prevent flickering, the change in ambient light level must persist for a certain amount of time, which can also be configured in the app’s settings.
DarkModeBuddy is available on Gumroad with a “pick your pricing” business model. It’s a very nifty new macOS utility for Dark Mode fans, and it’s compatible with macOS 10.15 and newer. Let us know what you think of it down in the comments.

When we work with low ambient light, using applications with light backgrounds end up causing an eye pain that we can avoid by using a dark mode, a dark mode that must be implemented both in the system and in the applications we use regularly, including web pages that we visit.
It wasn’t until macOS Mojave that Apple decided to add support for dark mode to its Mac operating system, a dark mode that didn’t work automatically until the release of macOS Catalina. Apple hasn’t made any other changes with macOS Big Sur.
As, unfortunately, it has been common, we have to resort to a third-party application if we want take advantage of macOS dark mode functionality. Gui Rambo, application developer and editor at 9to5Mac, has created an application called DarkModeBuddy, an application that makes use of the ambient light sensor (the same one that manages the screen brightness) to switch between light and dark mode depending on the values that we have previously established.
The application allows us to establish between the preferences, the level of luminosity in which we want the light or dark mode to be activated or deactivated, in addition to incorporate a timer to prevent flickering and that this mode is maintained for as long as we want if the ambient lighting conditions change.
DarkModeBuddy is not available on the Mac App Store, but we can find it in Gumroad under the business model «Choose your price». To be able to enjoy this application, our MacBook must be managed by macOS 10.15 or higher and not be older than 2018 although work is being done to offer support for equipment prior to 2018.
