r I am Marcella Segre and I am writing you on behalf of Billion Bricks, a non-profit involved in developing sustainable shelters for the homeless and in raising awareness about homelessness.
r This is an invitation to partner in building a research team for Urban Crossover, a global project and interactive cross learning exhibition platform to highlight the burgeoning housing crisis across major urban areas in the world.
r Based on the top 50 megacities by population size, we have shortlisted 20 cities who face a housing crises. You belong to one of those cities. We are looking for research volunteers to join our team in creating this database of information which will form the core of the Urban Crossover event.

r We are looking for research volunteers who can help undertake a short comparative research in your city. The ideal researcher would commit over a week part-time and one to two field visits to photograph. Your contributions will be acknowledged in the Urban Crossover publication.
r Urban Crossover is a joint effort by billionBRICKS, a Singapore based non-profit with a vision to end homelessness in the world; and INCLUDE, a Dutch Research Consulting practice. The Urban Crossover event is being planned to coincide with the World Habitat Day on October 6, 2014. The first crossover will be held simultaneously in Singapore and Mumbai and will provide opportunities for the two cities to interact and talk about their housing challenges and solutions.
r Housing is a human right, yet cities continuously fail to provide the same to their citizenry. In many cities, there are already millions living on streets and in slums and their numbers continue to rise at such a rapid pace, that it is becoming hard to comprehend the scale of the problem and find fixable solutions.
r The research focuses on statistics and policies on housing in each city. We are looking to find the gap between the most affordable available housing in the city and the earning capacity of its poorest citizen. For example, our preliminary research in Mumbai shows that the cheapest house available today costs US$25,000 and while a slum dweller could be earning anywhere between $30 a month to $ 400 a month. This research goes beyond the factual description of the cities by featuring portraits of people living in the cities’ slums.
r What are their lifestyles, aspirations and challenges? Based on their characteristics, interest rates on mortgage loans and property prices we will calculate how long it would take for the family to repay the loan.

Time Details

This is a research program to be carried independently in the city the volunteer studies. Times dedicated to the research are flexible and the volunteer researcher is completely independent in the planning and organisation of the research study. However part of the results of the research will have to be ready by World Habitat Day on October 6th and the final results will be presented in January 2015.
